This competition came into the scene in 1956, and it has its base in Auckland, New Zealand. It currently falls under the ATP World Tour 250 series category. From its formation up till 1977, participants would play on grass surfaces. In 1978, the playing surface changed to plexicushion, and this is the state to this date. It also takes place at the ASB Tennis Center in Parnell as is the case with the WTA Auckland Open. This match takes place on an annual basis in January, a week before the Australian Open games commence and it has excellent reception.
It all began in 1920 when the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association set out to find a home for its players. At the time, the only vacant site was in Stanley Street, and it was going for a lot of money. The association pooled resources from local clubs and together they were able to purchase and develop the site. Players in the industry held their matches at the site for at least three decades before their first international match took place in 1956. The match started off as the Auckland Championship, and it attracted both male and female participants. With the growth of participation, men's and women's events got separated in 1981. However, the ATP and WTA later merged in 2016.
